Famous Last Words
2 Timothy is the last letter that the Apostle Paul wrote. At least, it’s the last one we are aware of. While in a Roman prison, he anticipates that he will soon will die. Paul knows his part in God’s mission is almost over. At the same time, he knows there is still much to be done before people coming from every “tribe, language and nation” (Rev 7:9) come into the family of God and Christ returns bringing about the completion of a kingdom of peace and justice. In his letter written to young Pastor Timothy of the Church in Ephesus, Paul envisions at least the next 150 years of the church after his passing (cf, 2 Tim 2:2). In his letter, he passes on the most important things related to the gospel of Jesus Christ that he believes must be grasped, embraced and passed on. They truly have become famous last words. There are few words more important for the church than these.
