Demons, Disease, Self-determination, and Jesus
Mark 1:29-45
Throughout my five years at LAC, I have often made the point that Jesus did not come to this world to ruin our lives but to give us life. I’ve said, “Jesus did not give his life to destroy ours!” Jesus declared in John 10, “I have come that you may have life – life to the full (Jn 10:10)!” Jesus’ promise is directly tied in to the beautiful Hebrew notion of shalom. We often think of “shalom” only as “peace” but shalom is much more than the absence of conflict. Shalom speaks of how our Creator intended life to be lived. We have shalom when our lives are like Adam and Eve’s were in Genesis 2 – when God dwelled with them. We experience shalom when our lives are in right relationship to God, to self, to others, and to all creation. A life of shalom is a life that flourishes. It’s what all people long for, isn’t it?
The absolutely essential thing for a shalom-filled life is, according to Jesus, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength (Mk 12:30).” God must be first. If we will flourish, we must all start with the 1st Commandment, i.e., nothing can be put in God’s place. When God reigns in our lives, we flourish -- according to the Bible.
What the Lord has put on my heart all week is the flip side of that teaching, i.e., that when we allow anything else to rule our lives, we will not flourish. Those other “anythings” may promise so much but they cannot deliver on their promises. Tim Keller says, “Sin hinders human flourishing.” As we come to Mark 1:21-45, we are going to see stories teaching us how that is true as Jesus encountered a lot of people whose lives were not filled with shalom. Most of the people we see in this passage were not flourishing because of the kinds of wrongs that are in this imperfect world. The two main problems Jesus will encounter are disease and demons. But, we will also be forced to see how the problem is not just out in the world but also in our hearts. And, we will end the message learning from how Jesus lived a life of shalom in the face of busy-ness, non-stop demands, demons and disease.
The Stories -- Three Problems Hindering Shalom (demons, disease and self-determination):
The stories show us 3 hindrances to flourishing that we often categorize as the devil, world and flesh:
Problem 1: The demons of this world (1:21-28, 39)
We have a specific case of the damage demonic power can do in vv. 21-28 and then we have demonic activity mentioned in general both in vv. 32-34 and in v. 39. Most of us in the USA have problem even talking about this problem. So let me allow Mark to give us an introductory primer on demons:
- They are not mere evil forces – not like the dark side in the Star Wars epic. Demons are personal beings. They speak, they shriek, they try to battle against Jesus’ authority and… they know who Jesus is (v. 24). So: we learn that a person can know who Jesus is without being a follower of Jesus.
- They are impure (or “unclean”) – This word was not saying they were grimy but that that they did not belong in a place where God is ruling. When something was called unclean, it could not enter into the house of God. What the Bible is saying is that these spirits do not belong in a world in which the kingdom of God is at work. It’s clear that when God’s kingdom comes fully, unclean spirits will not be present at all!
- They like to attach themselves to good parts of God’s creation – I don’t understand fully why this is so but it is. In Mark 5, a legion of demons are cast out of a man but they desperately want to destroy another part of God’s creation, i.e., the pigs. “Why?” people have always asked. At least a part of the answer is that unclean spirits want to make clean parts of God’s creation unclean. When they victimized people people, they wanted to keep people out of the presence of God and out of the beauty of community. They want to destroy the shalom for which God made us.
- They have no authority over Jesus – Jesus speaks, “Be quiet! Come out of him!” The demons tried to resist but they had to obey. The lesson for us is this: When Jesus is the Lord and we fear displeasing him, then there is nothing in this world to fear – even demons.
So, that’s the first enemy in this world to human flourishing. One thing is for sure: when people are being oppressed by demons, they are not experiencing shalom.
Problem #2: Disease (1:29-34, 40-45)
We meet two people in this text who are facing another debilitating problem in our world, i.e., disease. The first is Peter’s mother-in-law. She was a woman who loved to serve – to have her life be a blessing to those around her. This, of course, is a Jesus-like quality. Jesus said specifically in Mark 10:45 that “he had come to this world not to be served but to serve.” All followers of Jesus will become people who serve. This is obviously a life of shalom. When we know that our lives have been used to help someone else, we are more fully alive ourselves.
But, this woman could not do what she longed to do. Disease kept her from flourishing. Let me be clear: Sometimes it’s hard for us to sort out which human problems are caused by evil forces and which are caused by disease – but they are two different problems. And, Mark’s gospel gives us a primer about disease:
- Disease was not a part of this world when God created it and declared everything to be good. So, disease entered this world when sin entered this world and began messing everything up.
- Disease is not always caused by one’s own sin. Many people in Jesus’s day thought that all disease was caused either by a person’s sin or his parents. Sometimes this is true. Even here in Pasadena, we have to deal with babies born with problems because their mothers were addicted to crack cocaine. And sometimes, we have physical problems because we make foolish decisions about how we eat or sleep -- or by failing to put on sunscreen and developing skin cancer. However, most often disease comes about because we live in a world in which so much is wrong. Disease is one outworking of the sin that has proliferated since Genesis 3.
- Jesus has authority over disease and is committed to recreating a world in which there is no more sickness. Beautifully, Jesus took the woman’s hand, helped her up and set her free from the fever. And, hallelujah, she was set free to flourish. She began to serve (v. 31).
That last point brings me to the second diseased person (1:40-45). The man had a serious disease called leprosy. V. 40 tells us that the leprosy made the man “unclean”. In vv. 21-28, the demon was unclean and here the disease made the man unclean. It excluded him from the community – from his family, from the work place, and from worship. One who had leprosy was viewed as dead as long as he had the disease. Leprosy robbed a person of shalom. And, people believed that only God could heal leprosy.
What I want you to notice is that Jesus hated the fact that a person made in God’s image was diseased. What v. 41 says is that Jesus was indignant about disease being in this world. Disease is not to be a part of a world in which God reigns. This response by Jesus is much like what happened in John 11:33 when Jesus went to the grave of his friend Lazarus and recognized the damage and sorrow that death had brought to people. The Bible says Jesus was anguished in his spirit. Death will not be in this world when Jesus reigns fully. In Mk 1, the message is that disease is not going to remain in this world when the kingdom of God is complete.
Disease kept this man from shalom. So Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man (who probably had not been touched by anyone for years. He said, “I am willing to change your life. Be clean.” And immediately the man was clean. Jesus sent him to the local priest because only the priest in a town could say officially, “You belong again. Come back to your family. Come back to your community. Come back to worship.” But, as we know, people were not made to live isolated lives. And the beautiful lesson of this passage is that Jesus acted so that this man could begin to flourish again.
Do you sense the ring of truth in these stories? Have you ever experienced how disease or injury can rob you and your loved ones of shalom? Remember that Jesus came to introduce the reign of God into our hurting world. Even when he healed people, that healing was only for a season. But, a day is coming when there will be no more sickness. Jesus as Jesus was among the people then, God will be in our midst in unrestricted ways. In Rev. 21:3-4, God will wipe away every tear. There will be no more crying or pain. All things will be made new. But, although Jesus’ reign is not yet here in its fullness, Jesus is still among us. In a few moments, we will consider one thing we are to do in a disease-filled world until Jesus returns.
Problem #3: Self Determination (1:43-45)
At this point, the message becomes personal. The first two problems – demons and disease -- are often things in this imperfect world that we have to contend with – that we may have had little to do with. But, we all know that the problems we must wrestle with are not just “out there” in the fallen world but also in our own hearts. You may not have even noticed the seriousness of disobeying Jesus in the story because, from our perspective, it seems so innocent. Jesus heals the man so that he can live a life of shalom in his community. Then, Jesus asks him to do something – and the Bible says he does it with a “strong warning’: “See that you don’t tell this to anyone.” But the man immediately goes out and disobeys. Using a strong phrase, the Bible says, “Instead (of obeying Jesus), the man went out and began to talk freely.”
Jeremy Rose told me, “Don’t be hard too hard on this guy. He’d been an outcast for so long and now he’s able to go back home! Who of us wouldn’t want to run out and tell everyone? And, Jeremy is right. We dare not be self-righteous in this. We can relate to the man.
But notice two things: First, Jesus strongly commanded him not to do it – and the man did it anyway. Jesus could command demons and they would come out. Jesus could touch a hand and the fever had to go away. We’ll see in coming weeks that Jesus could speak to a violent storm, “Be still!” And the winds and waves obeyed. But he spoke to a human being – a creature made in the image of God – and Jesus gave the man the opportunity to disobey. The same thing will happen often in the gospels. In Mark 10, he called a young man to leave his possessions and join the mission. But, the rich young man said no.” Jesus is the Lord of the universe but when he calls we must make a choice whether to obey. And when we say no, we do damage to the world around us – and our own lives will not be filled with shalom.
And that brings me to the other thing we see here: Jesus beautifully brought this man back into community – to a place of belonging. But this man’s disobedience led to Jesus having to “stay outside in lonely places” (v. 45). Jesus has the ability to speak peace not only to those demonized and to those who are sick – and peace to our inner souls. But we who are human must say yes. We must surrender to his lordship. Remember: you can know who Jesus is as the demons did – and you can be amazed at what Jesus did as the people were – but the issue is whether you will follow him by faith. So I ask you: Have you surrendered all you are and have to Jesus? When you sense there is something he wants you to do – or does not want you to do – are you ready to obey?
Moments for Reflection: Sin diminishes human flourishing (Tim Keller).
Do you truly believe what Tim Keller said – that sin keeps you from experiencing the life God made you for? I sometimes think we don’t really believe that sin and evil damage our own lives and the lives of those around us. The Bible is consistent in teaching that sin makes us less than we were made to be – and it affects everyone and everything around us. I think JRR Tolkien portrayed this as powerfully as anyone ever has in his Middle Earth series. Throughout his narratives, Tolkien shows how the “ring of evil” possesses the one who possesses it. Those who come into contact with it find that good things about them are distorted and perverted. The ring takes things that are whole and turns them into husks. The good and mysterious elves are turned into orcs that slavishly and callously fulfill the wish of evil leaders. Kings of men are turned into the ring-wraiths that terrify others but have no real substance themselves. Men become shadows of what they once were. Smeagle the Hobbit turns into the duplicitous Gollem. Smeagle’s good quality of loving beauty is turned into the obsessiveness of how precious the evil ring is. He becomes an emaciated slimy skeleton of what he once was.
Tolkien is showing us that evil and sin take good things and diminishes those things – perverts those good things. When we stop and reflect, we know this is true:
- Quests for beauty become eating disorders.
- Sexual activity meant to bind marriage partners becomes lust that divides and consumes.
- The desire to be productive becomes workaholism that fractures our lives and relationships.
When a different “lord”, a different authority, enters our hearts and lives, we hide things from those around us, we fill our minds with things that embarrass and harm, and we become shells of what God meant us to be. Bottom line: We begin to experience shalom when we practice the presence of God – when we live lives putting nothing before God (1st Commandment). And, when we turn away from God or open our lives to other lords, shalom is lost.
What Should We Do? Practice the Presence of God
When the problem is our own sin, what the Bible calls us to do is to confess our self-directed ways to God, seek his forgiveness, and turn from the sin. There is no way to read this passage of God’s Word without seeing that it is a call to surrender our thoughts, attitudes and lives wholly to the authority of Jesus.
But, what about those evils that we didn’t personally cause but that devastate us at times? How do we live in a world filled with demons and disease? The Bible gives us a powerful lesson from the life of Jesus. It’s found right in the midst of these stories of Jesus’ busy-ness, success, and battles with demons and sickness. See 1:35-36.
Jesus went to a place where he could be alone with his Father – and he spent time in prayer. Is that what we do? Jesus was experiencing great success with demons being cast out and people being healed. Everyone wants to come hear him – great success is beginning. Jesus’ own disciples say, “Jesus, everyone wants to be with you. It’s working. We’ve got to build on this great success. It’s working! Woohoo!” We would say, “This is no time to stop. It’s time to keep pushing forward!” But Jesus pulls aside to be with the Father. The busier Jesus got, the more he prayed. The more demanding life became, the more he prayed.
And because of that, Jesus’ life never became shallow. All who saw him saw the presence and power of God. All who heard him heard the authority of God. And, if Jesus needed to be with the Father in prayer in the face of the kind of world he had come into, how much more do we need to be with God.
What do we learn from Jesus about prayer? We learn first about the priority of prayer over anything else in our callings. In the best of times and in the worst of times, we need to pull aside and be with the Lord. If Jesus needed to be with the Father the busier he got, how much more do we need the Father. If Jesus needed the Father in the face of evil and disease in this world, how much more do we. You know how we are – the business at last is going and we think, “This is the time I need to work more.” When the ministry is going well, we think, this is the time to do more. Jesus shows us that when busy-ness increases, when challenges increase, and even when success increases, prayer must increase.
Second, Jesus shows us what the most important thing is about prayer – it’s a relationship with God as Father. Look at almost all the recorded prayers of Jesus and you’ll see they start the same way, i.e., “Father.” “Abba.” In the Lord’s Prayer, the first word is Father. The starting place for prayer is not, “Give me stuff today.” The first words should not be, “Deliver me from temptation” or even, “forgive my wrongdoing.” The first thing to do is to realize that the Creator has become our father when we place our faith in Jesus. When Jesus was with the Father, his strength was renewed. His sense of purpose was renewed too. He had come to begin a message of good news – to bring the reign of God into the world and create a people from every people group in the world who will also know God as father. As Tim Keller says, “The purpose of prayer is not first to get things from God – but to get God.” To the degree that you and I know the presence and love of God, we can handle whatever this world throws at us.
I’ll end today with a call to prayer. When Jesus was here, the king was here in human flesh. He would say, “The kingdom of God is among you.” He spoke and demons were cast out. He touched lepers and they were healed. Jesus will soon return and we will see this kind of liberating and healing power in its fullness. So, what do we do until he comes? We pray. And sometimes, we pray to our Father together. James 5 tells us to pray for those who are sick – and we do that here at LAC. 耶穌說"要盡心、盡性、盡意、盡力愛主你的神(馬可12:30)"。根據這句話,充滿平安的生命最本質的事情就是尊主為大。如果我們想要生命豐盛,我們必須從第一條誡命開始,也就是說,沒有什麽可以替代神的位置。當神主宰我們的生命時,我們的生命就會豐盛——這是從聖經來的。
這一星期來,主將教導中不太重要的方面放在了我的心上,即當我們允許其他事情控制我們的生命時,我們的生命就失去了豐盛。那些所謂的"其他事物"看似給我們很多應許,但這些應許往往不能兌現。Tim Keller說:"罪阻礙人類的豐盛。"當學習馬可福音1:21-45時,我們會看到一些故事。通過這些故事,我們可以看見主耶穌與那些生命中不平安的人相遇的真實情景。我們會看到,這裏的大多數人之所以不豐盛,是因為來自這不完美世界的各種壞事情。耶穌所遇到的兩個主要問題是:疾病和魔鬼。但是,這也迫使我們看到這些問題不僅來自世界,也來自我們心裏。我們通過這些經文將會看到,當面對忙碌、無節制的欲望、魔鬼和疾病時,耶穌是如何活出平安的。

- 他們喜歡把自己附在神的創造物中好的部分上——我沒有完全弄明白原因,但確實如此。在《馬可福音》第5章,一群鬼從一個人身上被趕出來,但他們拼命地要破壞神的創造物中的另一部分——豬。人們總在問為什麽。有一種答案認為,不潔凈的靈想把神創造物中潔凈的部分弄得不潔凈。當他們放棄了人,他們想要害人時,是想讓人離開神,離開美麗的社區。他們想要破壞神給我們的平安。
- 他們沒有管轄耶穌的權柄——耶穌說,"安靜!出來!"這些鬼想反抗但他們不得不遵守。這就告訴我們:耶穌是主,如果我們想討祂喜悅時,在這世上我們不會懼怕任何東西——即使是魔鬼。
- 這是世界中阻礙我們達到豐盛的第一個敵人。有一件事可以確定:當人被魔鬼逼迫時,他們沒有平安。
問題2:疾病(1:29-34,40-45)
在這段經文中,我們遇到兩個人,他們正面對世上另一個十分傷人的問題——疾病。第一個人是彼得的嶽母,一個熱心服事的女人——她的生命成為別人的祝福。這當然是像耶穌的特質。在馬可福音10:45,耶穌特特地提到"祂來,並不是要受人的服事,乃是要服事人"。所有耶穌的追隨者們都將成為服事者。這顯然是充滿平安的生命。當我們知道自己的生命被用來幫助他人時,我們就使自己的生命更豐盛。
但是,這個婦女不能去做她想做的,疾病使她與'豐盛的生命'絕緣。有時我們難以區分到底什麽問題屬於魔鬼的勢力,什麽問題屬於疾病範疇——但兩者確有不同。並且,馬可福音將疾病列為第一。
- 當神創造這個世界並宣稱"一切都很好"的時候,世上並沒有疾病。當罪進入這個世界並攪亂一切的時候,疾病也出現了。
- 並非所有疾病都出自我們自身的罪。在耶穌時代,人們認為疾病的產生是因為罪——本人犯罪或其父母犯罪。在某些時候這是對的:例如在Pasadena,我們不得不面對那些出生時就帶著問題的孩子——因為他們的母親是強效可卡因的癮君子。又如,我們在決定如何吃、如何睡的時候做了愚蠢的決定,或者不搽防曬霜導致皮膚癌。然而,多數疾病的產生,是因為這個世界的錯。疾病是罪的衍生物,自從創世記第三章以來激增的罪的衍生物。
- 耶穌有戰勝疾病的權柄,並且祂承諾再造一個全新的、沒有疾病世界。多美啊!耶穌拿起這個婦女的手就將她從熱病的捆綁中釋放出來。她立刻開始服事,得著'豐盛的生命'。(31節)贊美神!
- 我們再來看看那個得麻風病的人(1:40-45)。第40節告訴我們大麻風使這個男人"不潔"。在第21-28節,我們知道魔鬼"不潔"。"不潔"使這個男人被社會拋棄——與他的家庭、工場、敬拜隔絕。一旦得了這種疾病就被視如死人。大麻風奪去了平安,而人們相信神可以醫治大麻風。
請註意,耶穌不願看到按照神的形象所造的人陷入疾病的痛苦之中。第41節經文說耶穌對疾病存在於世界感到憤怒。疾病不存在於神掌管的世界。耶穌的反應再現於約翰福音11章33節。耶穌到祂朋友拉撒路的墳墓去,看到他的死對其親人造成的傷害與悲傷,耶穌就憂傷並煩悶。(因此,我們可以預計:)疾病不可能存在於耶穌全然掌權的世界。總結:馬可福音第一章告訴我們:當神的國度完全的時候,疾病將不能繼續存在。
疾病使得這個男人遠離平安。耶穌伸手摸他(恐怕這個人已經多年沒有得到別人觸摸了)。祂說,"我願意改變你的生命,潔凈了吧。"這人即時就潔凈了。耶穌讓他到當地的祭司那裏,因為只有城中的祭司有權柄宣告"你又回到我們中間了。回到你的家庭;回到你的社區;回去參加敬拜。"從這裏我們了解到,人被造,不是要過孤獨的生活。更美的是,經文告訴我們,因著耶穌作為,這個人的生命就豐盛了。
在這個故事中,你是否聽到真理的鐘聲?你是否經歷過疾病與傷害奪去你或你至愛的平安?請記住,耶穌來就是要宣告神對這個充滿傷害的世界的權柄。他醫治了某些人,這醫治也是為了某個原因。沒有疾病的一天必將來臨。當耶穌在人們中間時,神就在其中自由運行。啟示錄21章3-4節告訴我們,神將擦去所有的眼淚,世間將不再有哀傷與痛苦,一切都將成為新的。盡管耶穌在地上的統治還沒有完全,但祂一直與我們同在。在某些時候,我們還要面對死亡——耶穌再來之前,死亡依舊充滿了這個世界。
問題3:自主(1:43-45)
從這裏開始,信息涉及到我們自身。 前兩個問題,魔鬼和疾病,是我們在這個不完美的世界中沒有控制但又必須面對的。但是,我們知道我們與之搏鬥的,不僅僅是外面的墮落世界,更是我們的自我內心。在這故事裏,你可能沒有意識到不服從耶穌的嚴重性–從我們的角度來看,那似乎是無心的。耶穌治好了那個長大麻瘋的人,他就可以回到他的社區裏過一個更豐盛的生命。之後,耶穌要求他做一些事,聖經中說:耶穌"嚴嚴地囑咐他,叫他要謹慎,什麽話都不可告訴人"。但是那人離開之後立刻就不順服耶穌,聖經裏說"那人出去, (不順服耶穌的警告),倒說許多的話,把這件事傳揚開了。"
Jeremy Rose告訴我說,"不要太責備那個人吧。他被隔離了那麽久,而他現在可以重新回到他的家中!誰不會跑去告訴每一個人?" Jeremy是對的,我們不應該自以為是,因為我們可能也會做同樣的事。
但是我們要註意到兩點:首先,耶穌嚴嚴地囑咐他不要告訴人,可那人還是做了。 耶穌責令汙鬼們出來,他們就出來了。耶穌伸出手,熱病就退了。在下幾個禮拜我們會讀到,耶穌斥責暴風,"安靜!" 風浪就止住,平靜了。但是當耶穌對我們–一個按照神形象所造的人說話時,祂卻給了我們不順服的機會。這種事在聖經的描述中常常發生。在馬可福音中,祂叫一個年輕人變賣他所有的分給窮人,並要跟從祂。但是那個有錢的年輕人卻不願意。耶穌是統轄宇宙的神,當祂呼召我們時,我們要做一個選擇並跟從祂。當我們拒絕呼召時,我們不僅損傷到我們周圍的世界,而且在我們的生命中也不會充滿神所賜予的平安。
那麽,這就把我們帶到了另外一個要點:耶穌把醫好的大麻瘋病人帶回到社區中–一個他該屬於的地方。但是那人的不順服致使耶穌"不得再明明地進城,只好在外邊曠野地方。" 耶穌不僅僅有能力讓汙鬼和病人安靜,更有能力讓我們內心得以安靜。但是我們必須接受神的呼召,必須順服神的主權。你可以知道耶穌是誰,就像連汙鬼都"知道耶穌是誰,乃是神的聖者。"。當你了解到耶穌所行的各樣神跡,你也可以像眾人一樣驚訝。但問題是,你是不是會有信心跟從祂。所以我問你:你是不是願意將你的自我意誌並所擁有的完全交托與耶穌? 當你意識到有一些事是祂要你去做的時候,或者不讓你做的時候,你是不是順服?
回应时间:罪損耗了人類的豐盛 (Tim Keller)。
你相信Tim Keller說的,罪將你從神所給你安排的生命中隔離了嗎?我有時候想,我們可能不相信罪和邪惡會給我們自己和周圍的人造成損傷。但聖經一再教導我們說,罪讓我們不能夠活出一個神為我們預備的生活,而且罪影響到了每一個我們周遭的人。JRR Tolkien在他的"地中"系列中描繪得最恰當不過。在他的故事中,Tolkien展示了"罪惡魔戒"支配了擁有它的人。凡是接觸著它的人會發現,他們所擁有的美好東西都被篡改歪曲了。魔戒將所有完整的物件都變成了無價值的東西。善良神秘的elves變成了orcs,麻木而盲從地被他們的邪惡領袖所驅使。國王們也變成了追隨魔戒的幽靈,沒有任何宗旨地到處恐嚇別人。男人們變成了他們自己陰影的追隨者。Smeagle the Hobbit變成了口是心非的Gollem。Smeagle原來可愛又漂亮,卻對魔戒著了迷,他最終因此憔悴得只剩下了骨架。
Tolkien給我們展現了罪和邪惡怎樣毀滅和歪曲美好的事物。當我們靜下來思考的時候,我們會發現的確如此:
- 因為尋求美麗而變成了厭食癥。
- 性,意旨結合婚姻的,卻變成了欲望,分割了家庭並破裂了婚姻。
- 熱愛工作卻變成了工作狂,致使我們的生活和人際關系破碎。
當一個不同的"王",不同的主權,進入了我們的心思意念和生活中的時候,我們會將自己從周圍的人中隱藏起來,我們腦海裏會裝滿各種使我們困窘並對我們有害的事,讓我們成了一具空殼而享受不到神為我們安排的美好生活。
結果是,當我們開始練習神和我們同在,我們開始感到平安:我們活著每一天把神放在第一位(第一條誡命)。而當我們開始追求其他的主而把神放在次位,平安就離我們而去了。
我們應該怎麼做呢?練習神和我們同在。
當問題是我們自己的罪,聖經所要求我們做的是承認我們向神的自我指導的方式,求祂原諒,並遠離罪。讀這段神的話語沒有辦法不看到,這是一個呼召,要我們服從耶穌的主權,完全地放棄我們的思想,態度和生命。
但是,對那些不是我們親自造成的,但有時卻會摧毀我們的罪惡怎麼辦呢?我們如何生活在一個充滿了惡魔和疾病的世界裡呢? 聖經中從耶穌的生命為我們提供了一個強有力的教訓。這個教訓體現在耶穌的一切忙碌和祂的成功,以及與惡魔和疾病鬥爭的故事中。見1:35-36。
耶穌去一個地方,他可以單獨與他的父親在一起- 祂花時間禱告。我們也有這麼做嗎?耶穌經歷了很大的成功。他趕走惡魔,治愈人們,每個人都想來聽他 - 很大的成功已經開始了。耶穌自己的門徒說:"耶穌,每個人都想與你同在。這個真的有效。我們一定要繼續建立這個偉大的成功。這個真的有效!真棒啊!"我們會說,"現在是沒有時間停下來。現在是要勇往直前的時候!" 但耶穌退到一邊,是要與父同在。耶穌愈忙,他愈禱告。生活愈忙,他愈禱告。
正因為如此,耶穌的生活從來沒有變淺。所有見到他的人就見了神的存在和神的力量。所有聽過他的人就聽到了神的主權。而且,如果耶穌在面對他來到這麼樣的世界,都需要在祈禱中與父親同在,更何況是我們需要與神在一起。
我們從耶穌的禱告中學到了什麼呢?我們首先學習的是禱告的重要性高於一切我們其他的呼召。在最好的時候,最壞的時候,我們需要退到一邊,與主同在。如果耶穌在愈繁忙的時候,都需要在禱告中與父親同在,更何況是我們需要與神在一起。如果耶穌在面對這個世界上的邪惡和疾病的時候需要與父親同在,更何況是我們呢。你知道我們是這樣的 - 企業最後終於開始發展了,我們認為,"這是我需要加倍努力工作的時候。"當侍奉進行的很順利,我們認為,這是該多做的時候。耶穌教導我們,當忙碌增加,當挑戰增加,甚至是當成功增加時,禱告必須一定要增加。
第二,耶穌向我們展示了什麼是關於禱告最重要的事情- 這是一個與神的關係,作為父親。看看在幾乎所有的記錄下耶穌的禱告,你會看到都是以同樣的方式開始,即,"父親","阿爸。"在主禱文,第一個字是父親。禱告一開始不應該是,"給我這個東西。" 第一句話不應該是,"救我脫離誘惑",甚至,"原諒我的過犯。"第一件事是認識到,當我們把我們的信放在耶穌上,造物主已經成為我們的父親。當耶穌與父同在,他的力量得到復興。他的目的感也被更新。他已經開始了訊息,帶來了好消息- 把神的掌權帶來這世界,創造在世界上每個族群中的一群人也知道神是父親。正如Tim Keller所說,"禱告的目的不是從神那裡得到東西 – 而是要獲得神。"在某種程度上,你我知道神的存在和祂的愛,我們可以處理在這個世界上任何投擲給我們的東西。
