Questions for Reflection

Read Matthew 22:34-40

  1. Jesus references two Old Testament Scriptures in this passage (Deut 6:5 and Lev 19:18). Take a moment to read Deuteronomy 6:1-12 and Leviticus 19:1, 9-18. How do these Old Testament texts help us understand Jesus’ commands in Matthew 22?
  2. Who is our “neighbor”? (Read Matthew 5:43-48 and Luke 10:25-37 for more insight).
  3. What does it look like for us to love God, but not our neighbors? Or to love our neighbors, but not God? Why does Jesus include both, and how do they fit together?
  4. What does it mean that “all the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments” (vs. 40)? How does this idea of love espoused by Jesus connect with the Old Testament Law and Prophets?
  5. In order to LOVE our neighbors we have to KNOW our neighbors. How can you get to know your neighbors in your community this week? LAC has offered several opportunities for community building in the month of February—which might work for you? Who else could you bring with you?
