Toward Love
And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.”
Hebrews 10:24-25
About the Teaching Series
Inspired by Hebrews 10:24-25, our September series will be an encouragement to remain connected to LAC, our relationships, and to be engaged in mission during our season of transition. We will be blessed to hear from Lisa Borden, LAC International Staff, Dr. Mark Labberton, President of Fuller Theological Seminary, and Dr. Jorge Sanchez, LAC's pastor of our spanish-speaking community, Comunidad de las Américas. Each guest teacher has been invited because of their love for Lake. Come and be encouraged as we begin a new chapter as the Lake Avenue Church Family.

About Our Guest Speakers
Lisa Borden
Lisa Borden has spent the last thirty years in full time, cross-cultural service. With extensive experience in both practical and spiritual development in many challenging locations, Lisa and her husband, Byron, are convinced that the best “assistance” comes through relationships that empower and nurture the whole person. Committed to and inspired by Christ, the Bordens seek to alleviate poverty while encouraging an active faith in a loving God.
Lisa grew up in Europe and Southern California, arriving in Africa the week she turned twenty-two. She has spent the last three decades nurturing new Christians, first among Kenyan students, then among the Maasai of East Africa’s wilderness before six years among young people in Europe. Back in Africa, her passion remains the development of simple, authentic faith among those she comes into contact with. Lisa writes, speaks and teaches, and manages many details for Wema Ventures.
The Bordens team with local and expatriate partners in East Africa to carry out Wema's work. They have been married 37 years and have 4 grown kids, 2 daughters-in-law, and two grandchildren.
Based in Arusha, Tanzania, a growing and somewhat chaotic urban center serving as a hub for the region with over 1,000,000 residents, the city draws people desperate for work. Lack of jobs and painfully inadequate wages leave many families unable to thrive. With an average income of less than $2 a day, Tanzanians here and in every part of the nation are in need of training and opportunity. From this strategic location, they are able to impact the urban core as well as outlying rural areas as we help men and women create opportunities to provide for their families and transform their communities.

Mark Labberton
Mark Labberton was named the fifth president of Fuller Seminary in 2013, after four years as Fuller’s Lloyd John Ogilvie Associate Professor of Preaching and director of the Ogilvie Institute of Preaching. Ordained in the Presbyterian Church (USA), he served in pastoral roles for 30 years prior to coming to Fuller, most recently as senior pastor of First Presbyterian Church of Berkeley, California, for 16 years. He also has served as cofounder of the Christian International Scholarship Foundation (now ScholarLeaders International), chair of John Stott Ministries, senior fellow of International Justice Mission, and in a number of other roles of service. He holds an MDiv from Fuller and a PhD in Theology from Cambridge University.
Labberton is committed to strengthening the intersection of the academy, church, and culture, and brings to his presidency a deep desire to enact justice, love, and grace on both a global and local level. A popular speaker at churches, conferences, educational institutions, and other contexts, he often uses these talks to reflect on what it means to act biblically in challenging, often divisive cultural times. On his podcast Conversing, he further explores a broad range of topics—civility, race, suffering, gender equality, storytelling, and many others—with a diversity of guests.
Books Labberton has written include Called: The Crisis and Promise of Following Jesus Today, The Dangerous Act of Loving Your Neighbor: Seeing Others Through the Eyes of Jesus, and The Dangerous Act of Worship: Living God’s Call to Justice. Most recently he served as editor for the book Still Evangelical? Insiders Reconsider Political, Social, and Theological Meaning, a collection of essays on the meaning of evangelicalism in a contentious era.
Serving as president during a time of significant upheaval in theological education, Labberton has worked to help Fuller shape new, fruitful ways of carrying out its mission of “forming global leaders for kingdom vocations.” Through such endeavors as the Fuller Leadership Platform, FULLER studio, innovative forms of online instruction, strengthening traditional degree programs, and a campus move, he is leading Fuller in a process that will design the path ahead for seminary education.
Fuller Theological Seminary has a long standing relationship with Lake Avenue Church that began in 1947. We look forward to having Dr. Labberton share wisdom with our church family during a season of transition.
Jorge Sanchez
Dr. Jorge O. Sanchez was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The first influence he received was that of a solid Christian home; thus, through his parents' ministry, he came to the saving knowledge of Christ Jesus in his early childhood. The second great influence was that of an inspiring youth pastor who got him involved in Christian ministry when he was a teenager. God called Jorge to full-time Christian ministry when he was 19 years old. Since then, he has experienced the birth of a passion to know Jesus Christ and to share His Gospel with the largest possible number of people.
Seeking to serve Christ with increasing effectiveness, Jorge moved to Canada in June of 1980 in order to obtain his Master of Divinity at Regent College. Together with his wife, Frances, he led many individuals to Christ. Their efforts resulted in the establishment of two congregations in the greater Vancouver area. In order to further his ministerial abilities, he enrolled in the Doctor of Ministry program at Fuller Theological Seminary. He finished the program in 1998, with a concentration on leadership development. His doctoral dissertation became the basis for his first book, The Leader for the XXI Century, published by Unilit.
The Sanchezes moved to McAllen, Texas in order to teach at Rio Grande Bible Institute. Jorge taught several courses, including Leadership, Preaching and Pastoral Ministry. They also continued their pastoral ministry among the college students and at churches on both sides of the American/Mexican border. During these years, they developed a radio program called Realidad (Reality), designed to share the Good News of Christ. The program is now broadcast on a growing number of radio stations throughout North, Central and South America, and around the world through the Internet.
In 2004 Pastor Jorge was called to become the pastor of Comunidad de las Americas (CDLA), the spanish-speaking community of Lake Avenue Church. Together, Jorge and Frances have a growing ministry to the Body of Christ through preaching and teaching the Word of God. They have been invited to share in crusades, seminars, and special events across Latin America. Jorge and Frances continue to serve in ministry together in CDLA along with their son, Christopher.
