Read Luke 1:67-80

In our culture, it is very common to want to be the best. To be the first. To be the one that everyone will recognize and cheer on. And then there is Zachariah’s words about John, his son. The words that he speaks over his son is basically, that his son will pave the way for someone who is so much greater. John will spend his life preparing for Jesus Christ, the anointed one. The one who is to be made great. John’s job is to just set up the playing field for Jesus, and essentially be a background character. John will spend a lot of his time contemplating, preparing, and waiting in the desert. And yet his role is a powerful one in the grand story of the coming of Christ.

Sometimes in life we are reminded to get out of the way to make room for Christ to work. It is a humbling position, and at the same time an awesome one. We don’t have to be the great one, we don’t have to have it all together. We just get to point people towards Christ who has perfect love for all of humanity.
