What Alpha Meant to Me

I began attending Alpha in February 2018. At that time in my life, I had a lot of spiritual questions that I had avoided for years. Overall I wasn’t necessarily sure which direction I should be going, or how I could grow closer to God. I just knew that I needed to further develop my relationship with Christ and quickly.

After a series of events, and on recommendation of a Fuller Seminary School student Uchenna Anyanwu, my best friend Chidinma and I made our way to the Alpha Course at Lake.

Nneka Egbujiobi 450x600Nicki Gumbel’s presentation was well organized and touched on critical topics such as “Who is Jesus?” “How to Read the Bible,” and other practical and helpful themes. His messages were very straightforward and always presented with a winsome touch of humor. Almost immediately after I began attending Alpha, I started experiencing, what I later learned were spiritual attacks. At first, I didn’t tell anyone what was going on. Then, the attacks got to the point where I considered dropping out of the Alpha Course, as I assumed that was the cause of my feelings of confusion and discouragement. Eventually, I shared my struggles with my Alpha group leaders, Bob and Sharon. Bob, Sharon and Pastor Roger, too, were very helpful and supportive, praying for me and offering wise counsel. One of the helps was a copy of the book, “The Screwtape Letters,” by C.S. Lewis, which provides insights into the spiritual warfare Christians experience and how to deal with it.

Sharon, Bob and Roger’s openness, support, discussions, prayers and genuine concern for my life and spiritual growth gave me a sense of belonging and motivated me to keep pursuing

God despite my struggles and confusion.

Alpha was an incredible journey which jump-started my passion to follow Christ and cultivate an everlasting and more intimate relationship with Him. Alpha truly helped me refocus my entire life on Jesus in a new and indescribable way.

Since Alpha, I began the Core Christian Practices course because I felt a strong desire to learn more of how I should be living out my life as a Child of God. I wanted to make sure the seeds planted by Alpha were watered and would bring fruit to me and others. As the Core Christian Practices Course is concluding, I have decided to serve the Lord at Lake by volunteering with the Children’s Ministries as a small group leader. I have always loved children and believe that God can use me in this capacity.

Attending the Alpha Course led me down a path of hope, happiness, excitement and more importantly, created in me a desire to know Christ better and build a more solid relationship with Him. I highly recommend Alpha to anyone seeking Christ or needing to grow in their spiritual life.
