More than books...

For almost a year and a haIf I have been a tutor for Lake Avenue Community Foundation and have been enjoying my time with the students. Besides helping some of the young ladies with their studies, I have really been blessed to get to know them. As a tutor, it is important that I am consistent in attendance. I will not lie but due to personal reasons there were days I was not able to tutor.  However, I feel safe to say I’ve been pretty consistent. I do not ever want the girls to think I do not care. They are amazing individuals and filled with so much life and giggles. When I am with them it is important that they study, but it’s also important that they know they are loved. They’re amazing young intellectuals.

I am a mentor as well as a tutor to Maria.  She is such a wonderful young lady. She is so talented in music, writing poems and overall a caring person. From the time I have spent with her, I can see she is growing to be a smart, kind, God-loving and beautiful young lady.

Being a mentor is still a learning experience for me. My mentee and I have a good relationship, but I always fear that I am going to fail her. Being a mentor is an honor because you are able to make a positive impact in a young person’s life. At the same time, at least for me, I do not want to do anything to lose the trust of my mentee and her parents. Being a mentor requires dedication in keeping in contact and spending time with your mentee, being there if they need someone to talk to and listen. Most important is allowing God to work in this mentor/mentee relationship. I pray a lot for God to give me guidance to be the best mentor I can be and for Him to be with Maria on her journey in life.
