How STARS Impacted My Life

The reason I decided to become a tutor is because I wanted to inspire and motivate kids to become successful.

Before I was a STARS student, or knew what I wanted to do with my life, I didn’t take school seriously. I had a bad grade point average and slacked off in my classes. I decided to start attending the program in 7th grade. That first year I joined STARS I didn’t know what a big impact it would have on my life.
Now I am heading on the road to becoming successful and pushing myself daily to reach my goals. During the year an opportunity to become a STARS tutor for an Elementary school came up. I saw this as a chance to help my community work with kids (something that comes easy to me because of my personality), and provide them guidance on different academic subjects.

The five years of experience that I’ve had in the STARS tutoring program has inspired me to help kids stay on the right road to success; which is what I experienced when I was a student in the program.

STARS (Students and Tutors Achieving Real Success) works with youth from 1st through 12th grade, Monday through Thursday, 5:30-6:30 pm. Each tutor works with the same 2-5 students every week and is able to develop a meaningful relationship with them as they work together. No experience or skills required, but teaching skills are helpful. Requires a weekly commitment of 1 to 2 hours. Interested in serving or have questions? Contact Beth Winton at or call 626.817.4507.
