As a long-time fan of the Global Leadership Summit, I was drawn in because it offered a unique perspective on the integration of faith and leadership in the marketplace. I witnessed successful leaders, who shared my values, speak passionately about how their faith informed and enriched their professional lives. Their stories and expertise resonated deeply with me, igniting a spark within that urged me to explore more of my own potential.
One particular GLS year stands out in my memory – 2017, the first one I attended at Lake. It was during this year that the GLS stage welcomed a remarkable CEO named Juliet Funt, whose last name may ring a bell for some of you. Yes, she is the daughter of the late Allen Funt, the iconic host of the popular 1960s Candid Camera show. Juliet had carved her own path to success as a globally renowned keynote speaker, advisor to Fortune 500 companies, and founder of a training firm.
In her captivating talk, Juliet introduced me to the concept of "white space." At the time, my life was a whirlwind of never-ending tasks, ranging from work and family responsibilities to church, school, social engagements, and philanthropic endeavors. If my schedule were depicted by colors, it would resemble a vibrant Candy Land board game. I was driven, but a new kind of exhaustion began creeping in, inching me closer to burnout.
Enter "white space." Juliet explained the importance of intentionally adding strategic breaks and moments of rest in our daily lives. This intentional pause allows us to recharge our minds and bodies, helping us find alignment amidst the chaos. I realized that amidst the breakneck speed of my routines, I had overlooked the value of reflection and introspection. When was the last time I scheduled time for myself, to simply breathe and gather my thoughts? When was the last time that you have?
Since that eye-opening GLS experience, I have incorporated "white space" into my daily routine. It's a time set aside for reflection, for assessing what's working and what I'm learning. These moments of breathing room have been transformative, not only in my personal life but also in how I approach my work and interact with others.
Now, as a coach, I encourage my clients to embrace the power of "white space." It has become one of the first things I ask them when we embark on our journey together. Witnessing the positive impact, it has had on my own faith journey and leadership style, I cannot help but share this invaluable concept with those seeking to enhance their lives.
That's the beauty of the Global Leadership Summit – it offers an array of thought-provoking concepts and talks that resonate with individuals in different seasons of life. Attending the summit opens doors to unexpected gems of wisdom, providing us with new tools to enhance our lives and leadership.
