The Five Solas
The year 1517 saw the start of Protestant Reformation in Europe. Beginning in Germany with Martin Luther, this movement swept through places like Switzerland, Bohemia, Wales, Austria, Scotland, and England. Sweeping reforms in these places led to the translation of the Bible into common languages and rediscovery of the gospel of God’s grace. Churches like Lake Avenue Church are heirs of this significant movement. Although there were significant differences among the various Reformers and the communities they created, the Reformers were united by a core set of convictions. These convictions were eventually called the five Solas (sola is Latin for “only” or “alone”). Those who embraced these five solas affirmed the supreme authority of the Bible, the primacy of faith, the supremacy of God’s grace, the uniqueness of Jesus Christ, and the preeminence of God’s glory. Commemorating the 500th anniversary of the Reformation, Lake Avenue Church will be embarking on a five-week sermon series to explore each of these five solas. We invite you to join us in this journey.
