Questions for Reflection

Read Philemon 4-7

• What does Paul thank God for in these verses? What does Paul pray for in these verses? How are his thanksgivings and his prayers connected to one another?
• Read the whole chapter of Philemon and take a moment to summarize the letter. How do Paul’s Thanksgiving and Prayer in verses 4-7 set the stage for what he wants to say in the rest of the letter?
• Paul is hoping that Philemon’s faith in Christ and his love for God’s people will translate into loving action: receiving Onesimus as his brother and partner in Christ. But so often, especially when it comes to issues of justice and power (as in the case of Onesimus), our faith in Christ and our love for God’s people hasn’t translated into loving action. Why do you think that happens?
• God entered into Philemon’s relationship with Onesimus and re-wrote their story. Instead of seeing Onesimus as his slave, Philemon was encouraged to see him as his brother. In what relationships does God need to re-write your story, giving you a new lens through which to view your brothers and sisters in Christ?
• The Covells spoke about the difference God makes in our lives, and encouraged us to not be afraid to share our faith. They shared about three steps when witnessing: Ask them to share their story, Tell your story, Tell God’s story.
• What are some good questions to ask so we might get to know people’s stories?
• What keeps you from sharing your story, talking with others about God’s impact on your life?
• Share your story and how it fits with God’s story with your small group, trying to keep it under 2 minutes.
• Who can you reach out to this week, even if just to know to let them know you are thinking of them?
