The Story of Elijah - I Kings 19:9-18

  1. God's question in verses 9 and 13 and Elijah's replies in verses 10 and 14 are identical. Why is that? Especially after a display of God's power, shouldn't Elijah's response of changed even a little? Why does God ask that particular question?
  2. What do you think God was trying to demonstrate to Elijah there on the mountain? We often think of the "still small voice" of God as something that leads us and guides us, but God asks a question here instead of guiding (at least at first). What do you think is going on?
  3. How does Elijah get into this predicament, believing that he alone remains when, in fact, there are others? What about Obadiah in 1 Kings 18:16? Is this something that we're prone to, also? In what ways?
  4. Look at the instructions God gives to Elijah at the end of the passage. Try to come up with a succinct, one sentence summary for those instructions. What are they about? What do they have to teach us?
