
- Read again the qualities Jesus said are blessed in 5:3–9. Can you remember any people in your life's experience who were/are characterized by those qualities? Describe that person in your own words.
- Why would a person with such commendable qualities as we saw in 5:3–9 be insulted and persecuted, as Jesus predicted in 5:10–12? Why do you think that Jesus said that those who experience persecution are blessed?
- Discuss the effects of salt and light in the world. Why would Jesus describe his followers as salt and light?
- Jesus unequivocally described his followers as salt and light. In what ways might we not exercise the effect in the world that salt and light should possess?
- How, specifically, might you be salt and light in the places where God placed you?
- What is the main lesson from this passage that you hope to apply to your own life?
