  1. Notice the word "blessed" often repeated in the passage. There is probably no good English translation for it. It's taken from the Hebrew word "asher" (see Psalm 1) meaning those who know God's lasting joy and approval. Nothing in this world can take it away. How is "blessed" different from mere happiness?

  2. See 5:3,10; 7:21. The central message of Jesus' preaching was that, in his coming, the kingdom of God (which Jewish people sometimes called "kingdom of heaven" because they did not like to use God's name in public) is breaking into the world. How do you think your life should be different if God is in charge (his kingdom) rather than yourself, the world's systems and values, or the evil one?

  3. In 5:3-5, Jesus speaks of three inner qualities that should be true of those who allow God to be in charge. Discuss what they are and how are they different from the values of the world?

  4. In 5:6-9, Jesus speaks of four courses of action that should flow from hearts God is in charge of. What are they and how are they different from the ways of the world?

  5. In 5:10-11, Jesus clearly says that God's rule in our lives will lead to difficulties in this world. What does he say? Look back at the 7 results ("for theirs is...") of following God that Jesus mentions in 5:3-9 and at his promise in v. 12. Do you think it is "worth it" to follow Jesus?

  6. What do you pray might become more Christlike in your own life in the light of this passage?
