QUESTIONS FOR REFLECTION AND PERSONAL DEVOTION

Review the Sermon:

  • What stood out to you from the sermon this week?
  • Dr. Jeff Liou preached about passing on faith and leadership to the next generation. Who are the mentors who helped you understand the gospel and what it meant to follow Jesus?

Dive into Scripture: Read Numbers 27:12-23

  • What was God’s message to Moses in verses 12-14, and what was Moses’ response? What does this tell us about the kind of leader Moses was?
  • What do we learn from this passage about Joshua and the kind of leader he will be? (Option: What did we learn about Joshua in Numbers 14:1-9? Also, check out Ex 33:11 to see Joshua’s intimacy with God.)
  • God tells Moses in verse 20, “Give [Joshua] some of your authority so the whole Israelite community will obey him.” What kind of authority was God talking about here? How would Moses pass on that authority to Joshua?

Live it Out:

  • What do you think are the disconnects and barriers between older and younger generations?
  • What are some of the things you can let go of (that aren’t central to our Christian faith), in order to make room for the next generation?
  • Joshua is one of the only Hebrews from the previous generation who is invited to enter into the Promised Land. He thus provides a continuity with the past, while at the same time setting forth a new kind of leadership for the future. What do you want to pass on to the next generation of Christ followers? What can you do in order to help make that happen?
