In this passage, it seems that Jesus is both tempted by the devil and tested by God. What does it mean to be tested by God? Who are some other biblical characters who were tested by God? Have you ever experienced God’s testing? What happened?

What does it mean for us to put God to the test? Why do we put God to the test? Why does God command us not to do this?

In verses 3 and 6, the devil attempts to cast doubt on Jesus’ identity as the Son of God, saying “If you are the Son of God…” In the same way, we are often tempted to abandon our identity as God’s children or to fill that identity with new meaning. In what areas of your life do you face the temptation to abandon your identity and calling as a child of God? Or, in what ways are you tempted to redefine what it means to be a Christian—based on the world’s values instead of God’s Word?
