This weekend our church did several baptisms. What stood out to you from that part of the service?
-
Who are the “gods” mentioned in verses 1, 5-7? What does the Psalm say about these “gods”?
-
This Psalm seems to condemn those who favor the rich, taking advantage of the poor and oppressed. In what ways do we also favor those in power and ignore the needs of the poor among us? Why do you think we do this?
-
What does it mean that the ’gods’ know nothing, they understand nothing. They walk about in darkness…” (vs. 5)? In what ways are we similar, walking around in ignorance and darkness?
-
What is the command in verses 3-4? Who are the “weak… fatherless… poor… oppressed… needy…” in our world? What would it mean to “defend” them, “uphold” their cause, to “rescue” and “deliver” them?
-
What is the Psalmist asking God to do in verse 8? In what areas do you long for God to “rise up” and bring healing to our world? What role is God inviting us to play in His pursuit of justice and shalom?
