Questions for Reflection
Read Matthew 4:8-11
- How is the third temptation different from the others?
- What exactly is happening in this third temptation? What would be tempting for Jesus in this scenario?
- Take a moment to read Matthew 16:21-28. What similarities do you see with Matthew 4:8-11, and what do we make of this comparison? How does this shed insight on Christ’s temptation in the desert?
- In these verses, Jesus is tempted to gain authority over the whole world if He will bow down to the devil. Jesus passed this test, but it’s not so simple for us. What are the things, people, ideas, etc… that we worship instead of God? What are the idolatries—both individual and collective—that steal our allegiance?
- In what ways do we fall prey to this third temptation of Jesus, the temptation to domineering power? In what areas of our lives do we attempt to use power in domineering ways, instead of laying our lives down for the sake of those around us?
- Pastor Annie suggested several ways to fend off temptation in our lives: As individuals —
- (1) Focus on Scripture,
- (2) Love your Neighbor,
- (3) Live into your calling as steward…
- As the Church—
- (1) Remember God’s Faithfulness Together,
- (2) Worship Together,
- (3) Serve Together. What is something you can do this week to trust God and stay away from temptation?
