He attended Denver schools and worked summers in his father’s auto body shop. His family frequently spent time in the Rocky Mountains, where he developed a love for nature. He attended Wheaton College in Wheaton, Illinois, where he earned a BA in History in 1954, and he met his future wife, Julie Weaver.More
Don and Julie were married in May of 1955, and moved to Pasadena, CA where Don graduated from Fuller Seminary in 1957. They ministered together in Los Angeles and Mexico City. They returned to the United States in 1965, where they served in urban ministry in Chicago (Living Peace Baptist Church), and Denver (Neighborhood Church of the Master). He earned a Masters of Theology in 1975 and a Doctorate of Ministry in 1982. Their final pastorate was Fairview Heights Baptist Church in Inglewood, CA, where they fulfilled a long-time desire to see a church in a changing community continue to minister, with Spanish and English speaking congregations.
After retirement in 1999, Don and Julie moved to Temple City, CA, where Don taught the King’s Couriers Sunday School class at Lake Avenue Church, and led a men’s Bible Study in Hollywood. He also returned to his love of nature and oil painting.
Don was a sympathetic and thoughtful listener. He always had a word of support, whether a verse, a poem, or a song. He encouraged his children and grandchildren to take risks and trust God. He often said, “Faith is the continuing response to God’s work in our lives.”
Don passed into his heavenly home on April 4, 2024. He was predeceased by his wife Julie. He is remembered by his children, Robin (Alex), Cindy (Paul), and Jennifer; his grandchildren, Nathan, Jessica (Sean), Anna, Mary (Miguel), and Jonathan; and two great-grandchildren, Nathan and Kiera. He will be missed by his family and friends, though his kindness, compassion, and love will remain in our hearts and minds.

Ginger was born on March 18,1957 in Whittier, CA to Billie and Jose Gomez. One of four children, she was very close to and protective of, her two younger sisters Marca and Gayle, and looked up to her big brother, Joey. She attended Whittier Christian Elementary and Jr. High School where she excelled in her studies and found her love for theatre and performing. She joined Drama at Pioneer High School, where she was the first freshman student to win Best Supporting Actress for the Whittier Union High School District.More
After high school, she became an escrow officer. Through this work, she was introduced to the legal aspect of real estate transactions. She joined Jones Day as a corporate and real estate transactional paralegal. She spent most of her career at Jones Day and later went to Lamb & Kawakami where she retired. She took pride in her work, was incredibly hard working, and was loved and well respected by her colleagues, some fortunate enough to become life-long friends.
Many of Ginger’s passions revolved around good health and good food. For many years she was an avid runner, hiker, and aerobics instructor. She kept her body, mind, and spirit in shape with weight training, Pilates, and yoga classes. Ginger had a wealth of knowledge about foods, herbs, and nutrition, and she loved to experiment and learn new recipes in the kitchen – crafting delicious, nutritious, and flavorful foods.
In September 2011 she met, and eventually married her beloved husband, Jeffrey Mikl. Both Ginger and Jeff would say “God has given me the greatest love of my life”. They were best friends and spent the next 12 years doing the things they loved, building their business, and facing Ginger’s health challenges with optimism.
Although she had no children of her own, Ginger was a wonderful Auntie to her nieces and nephew: Chase, Taylor, Kiersten, Katey, Kelly, Payton, and Harper, and had an immeasurable impact on all their lives.
Ginger was an active member of Lake Avenue Church and the Choir. It brought her great joy to serve the community through song and worship. Her faith was unwavering and inspiring. She devoted her life to the Lord and glorified Him in all she did. Her toughest battles only brought her closer to the Lord and she was always certain of His plan.
It is impossible to put into words just how incredible Ginger was. She will be dearly missed by all her family and the many friends she made throughout her lifetime. Her absence will forever be felt, her delicious cooking missed at every holiday, her beautiful singing voice missed at church, her companionship missed at home — it will not be the same without her here.
She is survived her husband, Jeffrey Mikl, mother, Billie Gomez, brother, Joe Gomez (Debi), and two baby sisters, Marca Malm (Erick), and Gayle Lopez (Ron). She is predeceased by her father, Jose Gomez, Sr.
A memorial service to celebrate the life of Ginger will be held at 6 p.m. on Friday, April 12, 2024, in the main sanctuary at Lake Avenue Church (393 N. Lake Ave Pasadena, CA 91101).Post is under moderationStream item published successfully. Item will now be visible on your stream. -

She was born in Pasadena on February 28, 1924, to Bernard and Irma Chamberlain. Phyllis attended Pasadena public schools and Lake Avenue Church. She graduated from Wheaton College in 1946 with a BA in Christian Education. Following intensive language studies at the Summer Institute of Linguistics in Norman, Oklahoma and a year-long program at New York Biblical Seminary, Phyllis embarked on her 40-year career as a missionary to Japan. Career may be the wrong word, for this was her calling and her life’s work. Phyllis rejoiced in bringing the word of God to Japan and she left her mark by building and growing the MatsubaraKo Bible Camp and then nurturing new missionaries in their journey at the Karuizawa Language School where she was director for 10 years.More
Following her retirement in 1990, Phyllis returned to the United States. In 1991, she married Armin Geisler, the brother of her lifelong friend Rosie (Geisler) Ockels. Phyllis and Armin settled at Covenant Village in Turlock. Though Armin only lived 4 1/2 years more, the strength, joy, and love of that union stayed with Phyllis all the rest of her life. Phyllis resided at Covenant Village until July 2022, when she moved to a care home in Walnut Creek. Apart from the nearly 40 years Phyllis spent in Japan, Covenant Village is where she lived most of her adult years.
Phyllis Geisler loved the Lord with all her heart, and with all her soul, and with all her strength.
This love of God manifested itself in the way Phyllis lived her life. She was prayerful. Phyllis was intentional about everything she did. She was serious in purpose yet lighthearted in touch. She was brave. Phyllis was warm and generous and brought hope and healing with her prayers, smiles and laughter. She cared and she showed it. Phyllis had a grateful spirit. She was often heard to say, “God is so good.” It was her conviction and her comfort.
Phyllis was deeply loved by her parents. Irma and Bernard were proud to have a child on the mission field, even though it meant that they had to do without her here at home. The two of them made audio tape recordings on a reel-to-reel recorder and sent them to Phyllis so she could hear their voices, and Phyllis sent taped messages home. This helped them through the years of being apart.
Phyllis was dearly loved by her older sister Virginia and her younger brother Richard (Dick), both of whom raised families in the Pasadena area, providing Phyllis with 11 nieces and nephews. These nieces and nephews revered “Aunt Phyl” for her missionary work. Many were pen pals with her and all enjoyed her attention when she was home on furlough. Through her marriage to Armin, Phyllis joined the extended Geisler family, becoming Aunt Phyllis, Grandmother and Great-Grandma to a whole new cast of characters. At 99-1/2 years of age, Phyllis outlived her parents, siblings, and many, many close friends. She is survived by her sisters-in-law, Carol Chamberlain and Carolyn Snyder, and multiple generations of family and friends.
Phyllis was a people-person. She maintained correspondence with a network of friends. She sent cards of encouragement. She remembered birthdays. She stayed in touch. Phyllis was an easy house guest, always taking interest in whatever was going on. Phyllis was a joiner. Over the years at Covenant Village, she enjoyed group activities from painting, Japanese paper crafts, and cardmaking to jigsaw puzzles, Scrabble and Qwirkle.
Phyllis was a natural teacher and always up for a challenge. Most of her career in Japan involved teaching, even when there were no buildings to teach in. In retirement, when computers came to the Village, Phyllis helped others make the adjustment to the digital age, teaching computer classes and volunteering her time at the computer center. For over a decade, Phyllis mentored dozens of children in Awana at her church in Turlock, sharing her faithful spirit and nurturing theirs.
A memorial service will be held at Covenant Village, 2125 N.Olive, Turlock, CA at 2:30pm on October 7.
