Do you remember the summer that you lost out on summer? That one summer that you worked, interned, or found that the responsibilities of life were encroaching on your ability to just enjoy summer. I absolutely remember losing summer. The summer after my junior year in HS was the last ‘free’ summer that I had. Waking up and wondering what I was going to do that day. Going outside and meeting up with friends and playing ball in the street. Going downtown and grabbing tacos with money from the couch cushions. Riding my bike, getting my license, going to baseball games, and Summer Camp. Of all the things I did that summer, camp had the greatest impact on me and my trajectory in life. It had the greatest impact on my life with Jesus. If I had not gone to summer camp that year, I do not believe that I would be writing you this letter.
Many of our kids are still living in the place where summers are those lazy, magical, wake up and figure out what you’re going to do today moments. I realize that is not everyone and that some do not have that luxury. Yet, Lake Avenue Church has seen and sees the value of making sure that in the midst of summer, children and student have opportunities to slow down, get away, and focus on their relationship with Jesus. Whether it’s VBS, Camp, Beach days, worship nights, or all family skate night. We want your children and students to know that they are loved by Jesus and by the church. It may open them up to a life of discipleship. It may cause them to see and love others more. It may be the thing that changes their lives in ways that you or I could never imagine. It happened to me, and I have seen it happen summer after summer. I hope that you figure out a way to encourage your children and students to be a part of what is happening in our ministries this summer. If you need help, reach out to one of our directors and they will work with you. If your family needs help, myself and our staff are here for you.
We are looking forward to an amazing summer. We hope that you will join us and see what God will do in your kid’s lives and in the life of your family.
